Spectacular Death

Death Metal

"The Danish king was captured
Most of his guards were dead
For a ransom he was released
Then his people took his head" (Lyrics of Amon Amarth- The Beheading of a King)

Death Metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music. As Jacobsen proposed a 5th stage of death mentalities that characterises the contemporary times - "Spectacular death", Death Metal would be a great example of this attitude toward death. "Spectacular death inaugurates a revival of interest in death" (Jacobsen, 2016) we see  death as a topic everywhere in movies (especially horror and thriller), video games and even music. It is part of our entertainment industry, death is fun and it has become less of a taboo if approached from a safe distance.

Death Metal is an example of the obscene fascination with death that Jacobsen brings forward, we are interested by death as long as we keep it at arm's length. Death is a spectacle, "[the] main purpose today is to impact, entertain and provoke attention" (Jacobsen, 2016)Death Metal emerged as a  subgenre of metal that particularly depicts death, horror stories, gore, violence, blood, masochism and overall acceptance of death in a brutal way - and all this for the purpose of leisure. Of course music like this isn't fun for everyone and this music style usually appeals to people who like gore or horror and who find death as something you can laugh about or simply people who are into dark things. The grandiose way in which death is portrayed by Death Metal lyrics is definitely enforcing the argument of Jacobsen that we live in the era of "spectacular death".
